What We Do

She Built This City is comprised of three main pillars & age groups:

First, girls ages 9-12 and 14-17. Ages 9-12, we have “Explore Trades” Workshops & to begin exploration in maker spaces they may not traditionally be exposed to – construction, automotive, engineering, equipment operation & entrepreneurship in underrepresented spaces. In summer/fall 2020, SBTC anticipates after school programs & also “Builder Girls Camp” opportunities across Charlotte that work to provide finished projects to other local charities (planter boxes for food pantries, chicken coops, etc).

Ages 14-17, SBTC is scaling the “Builder Girls” club program for 8th grade girls in Charlotte-area middle schools (pilot program at Sun Valley Middle School in January 2020) – curriculum to learn a trade and run a business, with the expectation of joining 9th-12th grade “Career & College Promise” programs in High Schools. They will also be “pitching” their new Construction Company as entrepreneurs to local builders at the culmination of the program. Graduate Builder Girls will also have the opportunity to mentor the 9-12 camps as “pay-it-forward” ambassadors.

Second, graduating high school senior girls seeking advanced training – an alternative to the traditional, investment- and loan-heavy 4- year college degree. Through Summer Bridge & 3-month programs, SBTC will onboard them into the trade area of their choice – and most importantly, to the apprenticeship & company looking for appropriate interns and future hires!
Third, post-college aged (20+) and career-transitioning women seeking immediate opportunities and/or advanced training in the underrepresented construction, automotive, manufacturing and tech trades. This is an opportunity for women returning to work post-hiatus for family care; or seeking to build a business vs. work in a minimum wage situation; or career transition to an empowering sector of trades where “she can fix it herself!” Look for Building Women in Construction Fairs, Trade Talks with Women in Construction & a Ladies in Trade Club coming soon – where women can explore, support, network & connect.
